Teaching with Video: The Fine Print

An Overview for Those New to Using Video in an Indoor Cycling Class

It is always a bummer to get all jazzed about something only to read the fine print and find out it really doesn’t work as expected. My hope with this early article is to give you a bigger picture of what is involved in teaching with video, so as you get excited, you will not get tripped up by the details.

As a coach, I’m known to lay out the possible obstacles one might hit along the way. Some say this spoils the ability to “dream big,” as these obstacles can be viewed as negative, but I view this as making sure one can keep their focus on the big dream. Nothing can squash or temporarily hinder our goals more than hitting the road bumps in that perfect vision. My goal is to lay them out so you can hit them in style and show them who is boss.

What do I teach?

  1. We used Best Buy and their Geek Squad for our entire set up. They were very helpful, professional, and did a great job.

  2. As we begin to fine tune or program what is the typical standard pay for coaching video rides?

  3. I would love to have more information.

  4. Hey Lynn,
Absolutely wonderful to find another ICA member and instructor in the Indy area and on the same page as myself! I am at Community Healthplex Sports Club on Guion Rd. Another benefit to this fabulous membership and forum.
I teach a noon power cycling class on monday and will be instructing 9/30 at 5:30. This coming week I will be conducting a FTP/FTHR test and the following week the Acadia Natl. Park video ride with them as their reward. I’d love to have you join us! Another new instructor and ICA member, Ryan Bardes, is teaching a 6 a.m. class on Tues. and Thurs. with whom i’m partnering with to bring this new video concept and program to the facility. The Acadia ride is planned for tomorrow a.m.. I am also working on plans for Jennifer to visit sometime in the new year. Let’s connect. rshapurji@gmail.com

  5. Renee I live in Indy and would love to try your class, especially one with video. Sounds fun! Can you share your location?

  6. Great information, tips and PERFECT timing Tom! A co-instructor and I are working out the kinks as we prepare to bring video rides to our facility for the first time in Indianapolis. One of very few facilities that has this offering. After this mornings 6 a.m. class run through using Epic Planet’s Epic Acadia DVD we are very excited! There was great excitement, feedback and interest from the riders in the class, as well as, others in the fitness area coming in to see what was going on and happening. Perfect, we were so happy. We do not have state of the art equipment, YET, but it is on our wish list & budget request, as well as, window shades for the new year. We do have a projector, a dvd player and a large screen. We did have a “snafu” as you mentioned above. First, to get the video to play and then the background music. It’s a good thing there are 2 of us.
What we need to know is who do we contact to get price quotes for installing a complete system for us.
    Thanks for all the help.
    Renee
