Mainstream Music Monday: California Dreaming

Artist: Miley Cyrus
Song: Malibu
Album: Younger Now
Time: 3:52
Genre: pop
BPM: 140
Category: climb
Available: iTunes, Spotify, Amazon

A few years ago, my girlfriend suggested I check out this song by Miley, and I’ll be honest, I cringed on the inside—yet here I am suggesting it to you. I’ve always associate Miley first with her days of Hannah Montana and bubblegum pop, but she’s definitely evolved over the years. This is a song that depicts “Cyrus’s transition into becoming a more mellow artist, and more removed from her previously controversial image.”

I personally love songs with a swift climbing pace, so I decided to give it a listen. It starts off a little slow, so it’s great to use at the beginning of a ride as participants warm up. I instruct riders to increase the gear at the start of every chorus and “climb the ladder” while maintaining the pace at 70 rpm throughout the song. I even throw an additional loading of resistance in at 2:50 to match the uptick of the music.

Check it out and let me know what you think!

Oh I love Miley Cyrus. Her voice is so beautiful. Have a listen to Slide Away — I think this is the song she wrote when she split up with Liam.

I have always shied away from using a song by Miley Cyrus, but I couldn’t resist this one. I use it as a first climb as well. The sad part is Miley co-wrote this early in her relationship with Liam Hemsworth, but they have recently announced they are parting ways, making the lyrics and music even more poignant.
