Theme Ride Thursday: You Bring the Guac, We’ll Bring the Tunes—A Cinco de Mayo Playlist!

Enjoy this Theme Ride Thursday from our vault.

Songs for your Cinco de Mayo fiesta ride!

While many of us think Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexico’s independence, it actually commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over the French. Here in the United States, this holiday is celebrated with extreme fanfare. Maybe it’s because the nice weather is finally here, the nights are getting longer, or we love a well-made margarita. Either way, this playlist provides tunes from Mexico’s most popular artists and DJs, from Santana to Luis Miguel to Rodrigo y Gabriela to Chel Mayo and Deorro.  We’ve also included songs about tequila, margaritas and ones with ‘Mexico’ in the title.

If you’re looking for some quick choreography, then make sure to check out links to some of the songs that have been highlighted in previous weekly, music posts.

You may want to include this track by Chel Mayo called Mexican Rockstar in your cinco de Mayo playlist. It’s 85 bpm and would make a great warm-up or recovery track.

So sit back with a cerveza while selecting some of these songs for your celebratory ride. ¡Salud!

As always, please post in the comments if you have related songs to add to the list, but please make sure the artists are from Mexico or the song references Mexico.

  1. ¿Cómo es que El Gladiador Mexicano (Vamos Mexico) por Maná no está en las lista? At 82 bpm, this makes a great song to kick off any Cinco de Mayo profile.

    1. it is now! Thanks, it’s awesome! Might have to do a Cinco de Mayo virtual ride in quarantine!

  2. Wonderful article! We will be linking to this great content on our site.
    Keep up the good writing.

  3. I almost forgot about Linda Ronstadt’s album “Canciones de Mi Padre”. Possibly some flats (La Charreada), climbs (Rogaciano El Huapanguero) and other songs that could be used for the pre-class period while riders are entering the room and getting set up.

  4. Cafe Tacuba (Mexican pop rock band) has a few – Ingrata, Strawberry Fields, Como te extraño mi amor, Las flores
    Los Fabulosos Cadillacs – Matador
    Zoé – Soñé, Luna
Ricky Martin – Pégate (unplugged version), La mordidita

Thanks Ed! The Gipsy Kings are actually from France! (The things I’ve learned while putting this playlist together!) Expect them to make an appearance on our upcoming Latin Beats playlist!

      1. Right. It’s the influence of their parents who were from Catalonia that led them to record in Spanish.
