Spinning at the End of the World (12/21/12)

By Jennifer Sage On December 12, 2012 No Comments

Here’s another fun theme profile for your Spinning classes! In May of 2011, there were dire predictions that the world was going to end. As we all know, that prediction did not come true, and the main “preacher” behind the warnings simply said “ooops”, his math was wrong and went on undeterred with his crazy existence. This next prediction of the apocalypse comes with a little more history behind it – the ancient Mayans supposedly ran out of calendar on December 21, 2012, so it is sometimes interpreted that the world will end on this date. Others will tell you it simply means a new beginning. Me? I believe every day can be a new beginning if you choose to make it so! You can also make that your

Music motivates you – it’s scientifically proven!

By Jennifer Sage On October 8, 2012 3 Comments

We’ve known it for a long time in the indoor cycling world, haven’t we? But isn’t it nice to get some scientific proof to back up what we know as sacrosanct?

Music moves us! It pushes us beyond what we might normally do, it allows us to enjoy the challenges of exercise, and helps reduce our perception of suffering.

A few exercise physiologists, including Dr. Carl Foster (who created the Talk Test which makes our lives as instructors so much easier) have teamed up in an ACE sponsored study to examine the effects of music on exercise intensity. This article reviews the seven studies examined by Dr. Foster and his team. They also look into the work of Costas Karageorghis, Ph.D., from London’s Brunel University School of Sport and Education,

Learn how to use Spotify – get a 50% discount for the webinar here

By Jennifer Sage On May 22, 2012 4 Comments

Spotify is a wonderful online music tool but so many instructors are confused on how amazing of a tool it can be. While you can immediately listen to great music and learn to create your own playlists pretty quickly, it can take a long time to learn how to use it to your best advantage as an indoor cycling instructor.

What if you could learn it all right now at a live online webinar?

Julz Arney, Schwinn Master Trainer, is going to help you do that. She is putting on a webinar for instructors on how to use Spotify.

May 30 at 6:30PST/9:30EST.

Here is the description of the webinar:

You search and buy music on iTunes. You discover and play free music on Pandora. Well, what if iTunes and Pandora had a

By Jennifer Sage On March 7, 2012 1 Comment

Orbital has long been a mainstay for powerful and inspirational electronic music in the indoor cycling world. They are announcing the launch of their first album in 8 years, Wonky, (just the title makes me want to order it!) and are offering a free download of the track “Never”. Click here to get the free download from Soundcloud. I don’t know if it’s limited, so go get it soon! Scroll down to the third song in the list and you will see a download button. R.E.M. Tribute – Free profile! Post your R.E.M. Spinning® profile here!

By Jennifer Sage On September 22, 2011 2 Comments

Today is a sad day for music lovers around the world – it is the end of the band as we know it: R.E.M. is calling it quits after 30 years of working together creating fantastic music. Here is their official announcement on their web site, released today, September 21, 2011. I can hardly blame them, thirty years of working together….wow! But still, it’s a sad day, because they’ve been so instrumental (pun intended) in shaping the music world since the 1980’s, all the while changing right along with it. However, I am sure Michael Stipes and company will continue to create wonderful music on their own.

There are probably few indoor cycling and Spinning® instructors who haven’t used an REM song at some point in their teaching lives.

So, in honor

Do you ride to the beat when you teach Spinning®?

By Jennifer Sage On September 18, 2011 30 Comments

As a Master Instructor for the Spinning® program for 12 years, I rarely created my playlists – no, let me correct that – I never created my playlists based on the beat of a song. That doesn’t mean that sometimes I didn’t ride to the beat, I sometimes did (more on that in a sec) but it wasn’t ingrained in me to select a song based on the beat. It wasn’t ingrained into the Spinning® program, either. (At least not here in the US). It’s not in the music segment of the manual (unless the manual has changed in the last two years since I left), and during those 12 years I taught the Spinning® orientations, it wasn’t a part of the “how to use music” segment of the Orientation. Very few Master Instructors I knew used the beat. It wasn’t prevalent at conferences, including WSSC. Some MIs who came

A rockin’ fun Spanish song for your Spinning® Vuelta stages

By Jennifer Sage On September 4, 2011 No Comments

Someone sent me this video link because they know I love cats. And it is FANTASTIC for cat lovers – you will simply love the black cat Fum and his buddy Gebra, the owl. But…that song! What fun it is! And it’s a Spanish group (and a Spanish cat and owl apparently – they’re from a farm in the north of Spain). So I sought out the group and not only bought this song, but quite a few of their songs to use in my Vuelta a Espana stages! This one is called Deixa’m Dir une Cosa by Sopa de Cabra.

Enjoy this video – cat and music lovers alike!

This particular song wasn’t available on eMusic but a lot of other great ones were (Blujins Roc and Mai Trobaras). You can get Deixa’m Dir une Cosa on
