Exciting news for Underworld

By Jennifer Sage On December 10, 2011 2 Comments

Underworld performs live in NYC in 2007

Underworld is an electronic group from the UK that has been around since the late 1980’s. I’ve been using Underworld songs in my Spinning® classes for 15 years, and at ICA, we’ve highlighted several awesome Underworld tracks in both the Friday Favorites and Wednesday Timeless Classics.

How about this for some very cool news: Underworld has just been selected to be the Music Directors for the opening ceremony of the 2012 Olympic Games! Can you imagine receiving that phone call?

No one will be more glad to hear this news than my IT administrator for the Indoor Cycling Association, Brian Greene. Brian told me he’s been to dozens of Underworld concerts on several continents. Brian, can you get Opening Day Ceremony tickets?

R.E.M. Tribute – Free profile! Post your R.E.M. Spinning® profile here!

By Jennifer Sage On September 22, 2011 2 Comments

Today is a sad day for music lovers around the world – it is the end of the band as we know it: R.E.M. is calling it quits after 30 years of working together creating fantastic music. Here is their official announcement on their web site, released today, September 21, 2011. I can hardly blame them, thirty years of working together….wow! But still, it’s a sad day, because they’ve been so instrumental (pun intended) in shaping the music world since the 1980’s, all the while changing right along with it. However, I am sure Michael Stipes and company will continue to create wonderful music on their own.

There are probably few indoor cycling and Spinning® instructors who haven’t used an REM song at some point in their teaching lives.

So, in honor

Do you ride to the beat when you teach Spinning®?

By Jennifer Sage On September 18, 2011 30 Comments

As a Master Instructor for the Spinning® program for 12 years, I rarely created my playlists – no, let me correct that – I never created my playlists based on the beat of a song. That doesn’t mean that sometimes I didn’t ride to the beat, I sometimes did (more on that in a sec) but it wasn’t ingrained in me to select a song based on the beat. It wasn’t ingrained into the Spinning® program, either. (At least not here in the US). It’s not in the music segment of the manual (unless the manual has changed in the last two years since I left), and during those 12 years I taught the Spinning® orientations, it wasn’t a part of the “how to use music” segment of the Orientation. Very few Master Instructors I knew used the beat. It wasn’t prevalent at conferences, including WSSC. Some MIs who came

A rockin’ fun Spanish song for your Spinning® Vuelta stages

By Jennifer Sage On September 4, 2011 No Comments

Someone sent me this video link because they know I love cats. And it is FANTASTIC for cat lovers – you will simply love the black cat Fum and his buddy Gebra, the owl. But…that song! What fun it is! And it’s a Spanish group (and a Spanish cat and owl apparently – they’re from a farm in the north of Spain). So I sought out the group and not only bought this song, but quite a few of their songs to use in my Vuelta a Espana stages! This one is called Deixa’m Dir une Cosa by Sopa de Cabra.

Enjoy this video – cat and music lovers alike!

This particular song wasn’t available on eMusic but a lot of other great ones were (Blujins Roc and Mai Trobaras). You can get Deixa’m Dir une Cosa on
