Ask the Expert: a follow up on the calorie burning question
Jennifer Sage, May 17, 2012
Ask the Expert: a follow up on the calorie burning question A member left an excellent question on the discussion page for the itnerview with Danielle Foster about calories burned. She wondered if you put your accurate information in your heart rate monitor, why isn't the calories burned correct. This is such an excellent question I thought I'd expand on it and give you some advice on how to use those calories from your HR monitor. . . . keep reading
Video Ask the Expert: How do you "Keep it Real" in an environment that doesn't support it?
Jennifer Sage and Tom Scotto, May 16, 2012
Video Ask the Expert: How do you "Keep it Real" in an environment that doesn't support it? Tom and I get a little more serious in this video, discussing how to build up the confidence so that you can continue to teach an authentic class that "keeps it real" in spite of being in an environment where other instructors tend to use techniques, or students ask for moves that you know to be ineffective, possibly even unsafe. . . . keep reading

Jennifer Sage and Tom Scotto, May 10, 2012
Video Ask the Expert: Tom Scotto tells us how to fake it! |Image1|The second video we did while filming a Global Ride DVD on location in Hawaii takes the question of whether to work out at the same intensity as your students to the next level. Tom and I give you some tips on how to "fake it" when you don't necessarily need to let them know you aren't pushing it that hard. You're going to see that Tom has a great sense of humor! . . . keep reading

Wednesday Timeless Classic: May 9, 2012 This classic Spinning® song reached the top 5 of the UK charts in 2000, and can still be heard in cycling studios around the world. The instrumental version is almost 10 min long, great for a flat road focused stretch of road at 95rpm. The shorter album version with lyrics is a perfect longer interval recovery song of 4 minutes long. . . . keep reading
Part 2: The REAL skinny on burning Calories in your indoor cycling classes!
Jennifer Sage and Danielle Foster, May 8, 2012
Part 2: The REAL skinny on burning Calories in your indoor cycling classes! Listen to the second half of my discussion with Danielle Foster, Master Trainer for CycleOps and expert on teaching with power. Danielle and I go into kilojoules and calories and power output even deeper. This information is important to all instructors, whether you teach with power meters or not. Remember, just like your heart is beating even if you don't have a heart rate monitor, you are producing power (or not) even if you don't have a power meter! . . . keep reading

Part 1: The REAL skinny on burning Calories in your indoor cycling classes!
Jennifer Sage, May 6, 2012
Part 1: The REAL skinny on burning Calories in your indoor cycling classes! As indoor cycling coaches in the fitness field, we have a responsibility to our students to give them the TRUTH, don't you agree? Unfortunately, it's not as common as it should be. The biggest culprit? Claims of calories burned in indoor cycling (or many other) classes. Listen as I interview Danielle Foster, Master Trainer for CycleOps and expert on teaching with power. Danielle and I discuss where caloric expenditure actually comes from and what numbers are really the truth when it comes to how many calories are possible to burn in your classes. This is part 1 of our discussion; Part 2 will be for ICA members only. . . . keep reading

Friday Favorites: May 5, 2012 A classic Rock and Roll song that everyone should have in their library. Heads will nod, faces will break out in smiles. But this is not just a song to ride and sing along to - at 94bpm, you will be working pretty hard as you visualize a flat road just begging you to pick the speed up a little more... . . . keep reading

Video Ask the Expert with Tom Scotto - Should You Ride at the Intensity of Your Students? While on location in Kauai filming for a virtual ride with Cycling Fusion, I had Tom Scotto at my beck and call! So I took advantage of this situation and filmed a couple of Ask the Expert videos. In this first one, we discuss when it is appropriate for an instructor to ride at the intensity required of the class, and when it's better to back off. . . . keep reading
