Music can make or break your indoor cycling class!
Music can make or break your indoor cycling class!">
Check back here weekly for Mainstream Music Mondays and Friday Favorites and every other week for Wednesday Timeless Classics! We have three contributors passionate about music who will bring you the most exciting and unique song suggestions for your indoor cycling classes.
Jennifer Sage, founder of ICA, has been sharing her favorite songs with instructors for 15 years. She has a way with finding the passion and energy in a song that matches the desired emotion of a profile. Many of her playlists at conferences were among the most highly sought after. She draws from a wide range of genres, but she prefers electronic, with a downtempo and world flair. However, she's not afraid to throw in a classic rock song to keep her members happy and working hard!
Jorg Ellinghaus, Schwinn instructor from Germany, has a way of finding unique and different worldly songs that transport you to another plane and faciliate the mind-body connection. You can be sure that few other instructors will have discovered the songs that Jorg will suggest - so you can be assured to be unique at your club! He also loves jazz and other non traditional genres and finds a way to bring them to his classes. Discover more about Jorg here.
Kala Markel, of Pennsylvania, will bring home a traditional and mainstream excitement. Pop music is her specialty! I'll also be asking Kala to create an additional mainstream playlist for some of my profiles that aren't based on specific songs. Read more about Kala here.
Friday Favorites will focus on unique songs primarily from the trance, dance, psytran, world and downtempo categories of music, that work so well for in door cycling classes, especially for instructors who like to focus on the beat of the music to define cadence. This is Jorg's specialty, but Jennifer has a few exciting tunes to throw in here and there.
On Wednesday Timeless Cassics, Jennifer will share many of the classic songs from the early days of Spinning®, back when she first became a Master Instructor for Spinning! For the longtime instructor, they will wake up wonderful memories of the early days and remind you of wonderful songs you might not have used for many years, and for the new instructor, it will introduce you to some amazing songs that never grow old. (Note: these will be shared every other week).
Mainstream Music Mondays liven up your playlists with pop, rock and indie tunes that your students will love. When your students say they want songs with words, or songs they all know, then Kala's suggestions will hit the spot with you and your crowd.
Whenever possible, we will provide you with the Youtube video so you can hear and see the song immediately. We also suggest some of the best sources to find each of the songs. If it is hard to find, we'll search out the (legal) ways to find it! If you have a favorite you would like to share with us, please email Jennifer@indoorcyclingassociation.com.

I guarantee you, no one at your facility (or even in your area) will have this song...unless of course, they are an ICA member! It's jazzy, funky, chill, cool, and very rhythmic, all at the same time. Use it for a consistent fast flat, or for high-cadence drills. . . .

Marcel describes a song he heard at a major indoor cycling event in the Netherlands, one that gave him goosebumps as they were climbing. It may very well give you goosebumps as well! . . .

Love this week's song, by an artist I've shared many times before... When they keep putting out good songs, it's hard to stop recommending! This one is perfect for a push on a flat road or as a paced climb. . . .

This song isn't for the faint of heart. Forget "mind-body"; this song is hard-core body-body. No, this aggressive song is for when you want to bring the walls down. When you want the windows to vibrate. When you want to reach inside and accomplish something really big and shake some bones while you're at it. Warning: you're going to want it loud. . . .

While this song is excellent for a mind-body focus at an aerobic level on a flat road, I have also used it to raise the heart rate very gradually. I give an example of doing short, 15-second standing surges spaced out over the 8-minute song; by the final one it becomes quite hard. Enjoy! . . .
