Nothing says “I know nothing about fitness or cycling” like doing pushups while pedaling! Thanks to Marylou on Facebook for this image!

Spinning® launches the Spinner Blade Ion with Power

By Jennifer Sage On March 20, 2013 8 Comments

IT’S HERE!!! Mad Dogg Athletics and Spinning is launching their Spinner Blade Ion with power at the IRHSA conference going on right now in Las Vegas. I am so excited that they brought on Angie Sturtevant to help create their power program and to make sure they stayed on track with the proper science, ensuring that it tracked Kjoules and not just calories. If you don’t know Angie, she is the one behind the CycleOps power program and is an absolute powerhouse (pun intended) of our industry. If this bike is anything like it sounds, then it will be a huge success. Watching this almost made me salivate!

I am holding my breath a little bit, though…it’s still needs to be tested on the market before I’ll recommend purchase. I know

20 (Unspoken) Rules of Indoor Cycling (Fitbie)

By Jennifer Sage On March 20, 2013 3 Comments

Rachel Rachel Buschert Vaziralli is a Schwinn Master Trainer from New York who I’ve written about on this blog before. Well, Rachel and I are completely on the same page with indoor cycling. She is currently getting her master’s degree in exercise physiology and agrees with me about why instructors shouldn’t be doing some of the popular, trendy (read: silly) moves on an indoor bike, and in fact, we often share rants on Facebook about the shenanigans instructors and/or students do! (Note: Incidentally, regarding that post I just linked to about Rachel, she won the Fit or Flop competition!)

Anyway, one of Rachel’s recent rants got picked up by Fitbie online magazine, which posted it as an article. (Click here to read the post online.) I’ve pasted it below

Is Yoga a Fat-Burner?

By Jennifer Sage On March 3, 2013 No Comments

Yoga is such an amazing complement to cycling. I love what it does for my body in terms of alignment and flexibility, not to mention the mental benefits of relaxation and immersion into the breath. It’s a beautiful discipline with many benefits.

But a cardiovascular workout it is not, and anyone who tells you so is misinformed. Even Bikram, or other hot yoga classes in which you are bathed in a pool of sweat and can feel your heart rate in your chest during much of the class, are not going to burn many more calories than you would walking during that time. Martica Heaner, Ph.D., a Manhattan-based exercise physiologist and nutritionist, and an award-winning fitness instructor and health writer, has examined the claims that yoga is a fat-burning exercise in Click here to continue reading

Visiting Student: No One’s Ever Taught Me Anything Before!

By Jennifer Sage On March 2, 2013 8 Comments

This morning I subbed a class at a private facility near Vail, Colorado. There was a visiting student from Illinois named Betsy who said she “did a lot of Spinning classes at home,” so I welcomed her, introduced myself, and let her set herself up while I got my music ready and chatted with the regulars I hadn’t seen in a while. Within a minute or two of class starting, however, I was by her side, asking if I could change her setup, because I feared she might injure her knees.

Her saddle height was OK, but her knees were almost touching the handlebars! With my plumb bob, I determined that I had to move her back almost four inches. At her club near Chicago, they have the same Keiser bikes, and she said this was where she
